Day 15 of 30 · GEO Shopify – 30-day course

Day 15: Variant clarity: no mix-ups

Focus: Variants are a common source of incorrect AI answers. Make them explicit and consistent.

What you will achieve today

  • Prevent colour/size mix-ups.
  • Ensure variant images match variant labels.
  • Stop duplicate variant meaning across products.

Deliverables

  • One product with verified variant mapping.
  • A variant naming rule documented.

Step-by-step

  1. Open your hero product and list all variants in a table: label, SKU, image, price, stock.
  2. Check each variant image matches the label and SKU.
  3. Rename any ambiguous options (for example: 'Standard' -> 'Standard width').
  4. Ensure out-of-stock variants are handled clearly (not hidden if they confuse).
  5. Write a 3-rule variant naming standard for your store.

Checklist

  • Variant labels are customer-readable.
  • Each variant has a unique SKU.
  • Images align with variant selection.

Examples

Variant mapping

  • Good: Colour: Navy (image shows navy). Colour: Black (image shows black).
  • Bad: Colour: A, Colour: B with unclear images

Common mistakes

  • Using 'Default Title' variants.
  • Reusing the same option names with different meanings across products.

Done when

  • No variant in your hero product can be misread.
  • Naming standard is written and shareable.

Next: Tomorrow you will turn collection pages into guides, not just grids.
